CHILDREN'S FIRST LEADERSHIP SERIES - FALL 2008
The Executive Leadership Institute is pleased to announce that it is collaborating with The NYC Leadership Academy to offer the Children First Workshop Series, a series of workshops designed to support NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE) school leaders in the areas of instructional leadership and accountability. Below is a list of workshops currently being offered ---
Progress Reports I - (K - 8 ONLY)
To provide an overview of the Progress Report, its structure and the different components that schools are measured on. Participants will gain an understanding of each measure under the categories of School Environment, Student Performance, Student Progress and Closing the Achievement Gap. Using their own Progress Report, participants will identify needs and use the data to determine next steps for improving student outcomes.

Quality Review Part I
This workshop highlights the changes in the Quality Review process for the 2008-09 school year. The relationship between the Leadership Competencies and the QR as a lens for school improvement will be examined. Participants will obtain a foundation to help them to develop their leadership skills with an emphasis on accountability.

Microsoft Excel for Beginners
This workshop introduces participants with little or no previous background in Excel or other spreadsheet applications to Microsoft Excel, a powerful spreadsheet program that allows users to input, analyze and present data. The workshop will move from basic concepts and components of worksheets to the manipulation of data and creation of graphs.

Microsoft Excel for Advanced Users (Pre-requisite - Working Knowledge of Excel)
This workshop focuses on complex features of Excel and skills that extend Excel to work with other file formats. It is intended for those who have completed a session of Microsoft Excel (Beginners) through ELI, any other workshop that has presented similar skills, or for those who are proficient in the skills addressed in such workshops. Modifying workbooks with multiple worksheets, constructing and using complex formulas and functions for high level analytical thinking and collaboration, and exporting data to PowerPoint and Access Database will be covered.

Special Education Workshops:
Compliance & Supervision
This session is designed to provide participants with the resources we consider the potential pitfalls of IDIEA, mandated services and other laws related to the education of students with special needs. Participants will identify strategies to monitor and manage special education programs that promote effective instruction and improve the progress and achievement of students with special needs. Additionally, participants will explore the relationship between vision/values and the school’s instructional program and how these impact the achievement of special education students. After assessing the current vision and the performance of the school, participants will identify the goals for positive changes and develop strategies and tools to implement these changes.
Leadership of Special Education in the Small School
Understanding that small schools are not miniature large schools, this session is designed to provide small school leaders with the opportunity to network and share best practices around serving students with special needs in a small school setting. Participants will discuss compliance mandates and instructional leadership challenges including sharing space, identifying external resources and communication with parents/caregivers. The focus will be on addressing the unique aspects of managing special education programs and services and building capacity within the schools.

Maximizing Your Budget
This workshop will provide principals with insight into maintaining core instructional programs in face of budget cuts. Participants will obtain understanding of budgeting to survive in bad financial times. Using their own budgets participants will identify core program priorities.

Scheduling & Programming to Facilitate Student Achievement
Designed to take the mystery out of scheduling and programming, this workshop will provide participants with the basics of programming for middle/high school, while addressing the art of possibility when planning for effective use of people, space, time and school resources. A key goal of the session is to help participants understand how an effective program drives instructional practice. (There will be a level 2 of this workshop)

Dynamic Conversations: In Support of Instructional Change
This workshop focuses on elements of powerful communication skills that help to support improved instructional practices and student achievement results. Participants will examine the leadership skills that proactively manage difficult conversations around needed changes and improvements in instructional practices/ outcomes. Opportunities for practical applications using realistic scenarios will be presented.
