Betsy DeVos's confirmation as US Secretary of Education sets a bad precedent for our country.
The fact that someone with no experience in public education other than working to subvert it is now going to be responsible for overseeing the education of our nation's children is truly distressing.
One idea that supported her appointment, that we need a "disrupter" to helm the agency charged with giving our children the educational foundation on which they will build their working and professional lives, implies that under DeVos we are in for more turmoil than teaching.
It does not bode well for our schools, the professionals who lead them, or the children who depend on them.
That being said, we look forward to Mrs. DeVos fulfilling the promise she made during her confirmation hearing, that she will "address the needs of all parents and students" as she assumes this post that will so influence our nation's future.
We will be watching.
